A familiar presence on the London scene, Alldis' latest project has been to create a suite based on his trio's jazz explorations of familiar nursery rhymes, each piece cushioned by deftly placed string writing, all the arrangements the responsibility of Alldis himself. Thus we go from ‘Rock-A-Bye Baby’ to ‘Frère Jacques’ via such as ‘Alouette’, ‘Ding Dong Bell’, and ‘Old King Cole’: 14 tracks in all. As they unfold, it's evident that Alldis himself knows the lexicon of contemporary jazz piano very well, deploying a perfect Jarrett-like touch at the keyboard, and an ability to pick up the necessary swing feeling (expertly aided by Cleyndert and France) in an utterly engaging way. While it is gratifying to celebrate the variety of invention and resourcefulness on offer, I can't overcome a sense of a Jacques Loussier-like attempt to jazz up banal themes, which remain what they always were, charming yet over-familiar tunes from childhood. Good for those seeking to revisit that period in their lives or who have young children hep enough to respond to this pathway into jazz.
