Miller's best and rightly known for his contribution to Sting's band. His nylon string style is immediately identifiable, and has become a signature sound for his boss. So it's hardly surprising thatit's featured heavily on his solo outings. Which makes 5th House a pleasurable surprise as Miller embraces a wider range of colours than usual, from the bluesy rock of ‘If Only’ through to the positively ‘heavy’ ‘Yes’, replete with big, fat, distorted power chords. But, of course there are elegant lines and lyric grooves – the opening ‘Angel’ is suitably heavenly and hushed, while that acoustic is to the fore on ‘Gate 23’. But it's the atmospherics of the darkly moody ‘Catalan’ that catch the ear. There's also space for the stellar sidemen: the ever restless drums of Colaiuta surge and crash around ‘Dead Head’, with its Philip Catherine like feel, while Johnson lends his usual foundation laying (and occasionally foundation shaking) bass tones. A quietly satisfying, but at times gleefully ballsy outing.
