Arriving to great acclaim as one third of John McLaughlin's 1990s trio alongside Indo-jazz drum deity Trilok Gurtu, electric bassist Dominique Di Piazza delivered a spellbinding performance on the guitar legend's 1992 album, Que Alegria. What most listeners, especially bassists, found extraordinary was Di Piazza's fleet-fingered ability to match Johnny Mac note for note, while also bringing a dazzling knowledge of chordal harmony to the bass, creating his own gypsy-jazz-fusion hybrid akin to a merging of Django Reinhardt and Jaco Pastorius' distinctive styles. He's continued as a highly-rated sideman ever since, and has made a few solo albums too, this being the latest. Showcasing his fired-up French quartet as well as revisiting several of his compositions, notably the title-track and the frenetic Spanish-tinged ‘Nuestra Esperanza’, the ensemble turn in an impassioned performance. The bassist's lyricism is often displayed in languorous post-Weather Report-style melodies and the kind of yearning sustained notes Pastorius famously favoured, and when it comes to that now-legendary speed there really is no one else on the bass that can concoct such finger-bending fireworks with the same degree of finesse. The ensemble gel well, with drummer Viccaro offering dynamic propulsion and pianist Privat delivering some equally passionate solos, but it's Chausse's occasional use of synth tones on the EWI that kills some of the vibe here, the results sounding dated. Di Piazza is at the peak of his powers, delivering some jaw-dropping solos, although tighter song lengths and less EWI would have elevated this album to greater heights.
