Much has been made of Cherry's status as a pioneer of jazz as a universal means of expression that draws from any folk culture within reach, but he was also a great bridge between the worlds of song and sound exploration. If there is a signe particulier that defines a gig by the late trumpeter it is the way a flurry of rapidly changing, abstract textures, usually with the beat scrambling into rubato, give way to a joyously rousing unison line, delivered with all of the punch of gospel choir members who know that they have to lift their voices together with the utmost conviction. These engrossing performances from Cherry's adopted city are no exception to the rule and boast a fine international band comprising local and Turkish personnel on tracks recorded over a three-year period. Nothing sums up the generosity and celebratory spirit more than the presence of ‘children and visiting friends’ that lend their energies to the final epic, uplifting session.
