Recorded in 1977 by sound engineer and photographer Nils Edström, this live recording of Don Cherry and his band performing at Stockholm's Modern Art Gallery is a rare and precious document that has now been thankfully preserved. In an improvised concert festooned with strange, exotic instrumentation, the bulk of the material played here is adapted from Cherry's Hear & Now album that was released by Atlantic Records the previous year. As percussionist Per Tjernberg recollects in his sleeve notes for this release, the concert took on the shape of a Hear & Now unplugged, in that Cherry had taken the material back to its most basic form to let it breathe again. Surrounded by such players as Blood Sweat & Tears guitarist Georg ‘Jojje’ Wadenius, his wife Moki Cherry playing tamboura alongside fellow tambourist Lena Ahlman and Peter Ek on tabla, the set is an intoxicating mix of free jazz and ethnic music exploration that pulsates with a communal energy and warmth.
