One of the most sought-after drummers on the current jazz scene, Donald Edwards wants to be recognised equally as a composer. On this, his second CD for Criss Cross, there are six excellent examples of his writing abilities – plus three short interludes tied into the birth of his daughter – at various tempos and the musicians he’s chosen sound absolutely perfect for the tunes. Walter Smith’s sinuous, slithery angular tenor is at its most original on this date, especially on ‘Incantation’ and Alex Sipiagin ‘s ‘Way to Her’, heard on the Russian trumpeter’s own most recent album. This features an almost wordless vocal harmony line by Sessoms, one of Edwards’ frequent employers: also mainly Fender work by Payton, who happened to be in the studio at the time. Gilmore’s totally effortless melody lines are just what the songs require and Orrin Evans, as always, comes up with the unexpected. For years now, this writer has sung the praises of bassist Curtis. This is arguably his most telling recorded performance yet. There are also two covers, both treated with great respect – Benny Golson’s classic ‘Stablemates’ reharmonised and a seldom-heard Monk tune, ‘Skippy’. Another first class Criss Cross date reflecting the current New York scene, where it’s still not a sin to swing!
