Seventeen years into Dose Hermanos' journey, this is their first collection of acoustic piano (Yamaha and Baldwin) performances. The composition credits state ‘Blotter Brothers Publishing’ – Blotter Brothers being a free translation from the Spanglish – and while both played keyboards at different periods in the Grateful Dead's 30-year trip, their musical rapport goes way beyond musical ex-trade. Batique's packaging is minimalist but the music is rich and deliciously other. Its extemporised marvels include such core-repertoire revisitings as ‘Waltz of the Autumn Moon’ and ‘Shadow of the Invisible Man’ and new compositions laurelled with titles like ‘Here To Their’, ‘Smoke Rings of My Mind’ and ‘Appalachian Summer’. What bursts forth is Batique's sheer melodicism and breadth of allusions. Bralove's cover painting is like Escher got spiked while contemplating Mondrian's batik period. Their lyricism, worthy of Satie, Debussy and Legrand – with hits of dissonance – will pin armchair psychedelic tourists to the back of their comfy chairs.
