Everyone should have a little Dr John in their lives, and this recording with a full-blooded big band, not a format readily associated with the good Doctor, might suggest it’s a must buy. Recorded during time out from a European tour, the WDR band, as it has done with so many US guests, goes for the works: blary trombones, massed brass and thumping arrangements. It can all sound a bit cod ‘Nawlins, notably on the roistering ‘My Indian Red’ replete with the theme of ‘When the Saints Come Marching In’.
But there are solo spots that allow us to revel in Mac’s rolling, signature piano style, notably a jolly ‘Stagger Lee’ sung against those murderous lyrics. But then solo spots like this and ‘Sipitana’ make you realise that Dr John really doesn’t need all that big ‘n beefy brass: his irascible growl, his surprising tenderness and of course that gorgeous piano work really don’t need clagging down in swampy, predictable arrangements.
So, a must buy, yes, but only if you are a Rebennack completist.
