Having been lucky enough to see Smith at the Jazz Café with Lou Donaldson a few years ago, I can vouch for the fact that he is a master of the Hammond B-3 who is as good live as those classic 1960s Blue Note albums led to believe. The Jimmy Smith style organ-guitar-drums set up particularly suits him as the additional space brings out the pumping basslines that are an integral part of the Good Doctor's hearty musical prescription. While this 2011 gig from the Lamantin jazz festival in Hungary has highlights in the shape of the two epic tracks that top and tail the set, it is sadly undermined by a ropey audio quality that does not adequately capture all of the detail of Jamire Williams’ drums, which is crucial in a small group setting such as this. His higher frequencies in particular are swamped by the heft of the keyboard to the extent that the music ends up being frustratingly top-heavy. With that in mind it makes perfect sense for a producer with a pair of decent ears and a bit of nous to get the trio to a studio pronto.
