This set was taped at Basin Street Records' 20th anniversary party at the Little Gem club in New Orleans and represents one aspect of present-day Crescent City music-making. White is a staunch traditionalist steeped in the early clarinet style of George Lewis; but he is no Lewis parodist and combines well with Stafford, a trumpeter who also keeps close to the earlier style – both men are in their sixties and were encouraged as youngsters by Danny Barker – and they each know how to build a solo. ‘Canal Street Blues’ is full of trumpet growls and clarinet runs, over the banjo-bass bounce, with riffs, effects, wailing horns to the fore. White's ‘I Love You Too Much To Leave You’ is a ballad with Stafford's sole vocal, while ‘Caribbean Girl’, also by White, is a calypso, again highly rhythmic, White reminding me of Omer Simeon, before ‘Summertime’ allows him to bare his soul emotionally, with a long cadenza of quite alluring quality. ‘Give It Up’, features Marsalis and is a chunky riff with the drummer driving well before he solos on mallets with White alongside. Engaging music.
