Baker's first outing, many light years ago, was There's Something for Everyone in America and these two reissues remind us there's something for everyone in Baker's remarkable grasp on disparate styles. Outside, as the title suggests, captures the rarely documented ‘free’ side of Baker, partly influenced by Chadbourne whom he'd jammed with in Canada. So prepare for plenty of percussive effects (notably on ‘Klee’) and a bevy of buzzes and clicks. No surprise from this that Baker would hook up with John Zorn. But out of the blue, there's also a lyrical ‘You Are My Sunshine’, recalling Baker's more melodic side. A folk feel is more to the fore on The County Set, which is actually a two-fer-one as it includes the solo album You Can't Take the Country Out of the Boy. This is a joyous set, recorded in Germany, but looking back over a range of American vernacular styles, be it fiddle tunes, Western Swing, rags, a fab version of Berry's ‘Maybelline’ and a nicely vicious original ‘New Song of the South’. The County Set itself is a treasure, not only as it's again previously unreleased but it plugs into Baker's fascination for Irish/Scottish modes, with McNeil's fiddle a welcome bonus.
