As if a raft of Baker reissues wasn't enough, here's a new recording of his swinging trio work. The core relationship with Ward goes back a decade, while his one with ‘new boy’ Edwards goes back to about 2013 when much of this material was written. No surprise then that this all acoustic line-up has an easeful intimacy, able to move through the gears from the funkish groove of ‘Un Pezzo Piazzo’ to a slower blues of ‘Twelve Gates’ and back up to the boppish pace of the title track. In an age when technical facility dominates recording, when filling each unforgiving minute with a mass of overdubs and multi-tracking seems the norm, Baker's spacious, gentle but never facile swing is refreshing. Baker nods to classic ‘golden age’ artists from Benny Carter to Bud Powell, from Buddy Bolden to Sonny Clark, but these largely original compositions always maintain Baker's own flourish, notably on the quirk of ‘The Odd Fellows March’. And watch out for Baker's take on Monk, soon to be found on that breakthrough new medium, vinyl.
