If you are going to name yourselves after a Hindu deity (and, secondguessing that Shakti, the embodiment of feminine creative force, is baggsied) then the warrior aspect of the Divine Mother is a good choice. In Hindu iconography, it is not Durga rising but Durga riding — a tigress, sometimes a lioness — that springs to mind. Kuljit Bhamra, one of the three leading lights here, was born in Kenya, but maybe he has done the walk down the causeway in the middle of the lake in Jalandhar to its island Durga mandir (‘temple’). There’s a lot of meanwhile to this expanded edition of the original 1995 release. Jungr is a singer making fewer attempts to rein in her vocal trick bag — vibrato, for example — on Durga Rising. She and her voice have learnt a lot since this appeared in 1995. It fixes a point in time in several senses, but tracks such as ‘Go Down Easy’, ‘Spit It Out’ and ‘Still Moving’ still retain an aura and a timeless buzz. Durga Rising is back on the road in 2012 with Simon Wallace replacing Russell Churney. It will be interesting to discover how time tempers the tales.
