World Peace Trio was recorded a matter of months after Dharmawan's sensational bolt-from-the blue earlier in the year, the 2CD set Pasar Klewer on Leonardo Pavkovic's MoonJune label. Pavkovic also played a role in the release of the World Peace Trio on the Enja label, which reunites Dharmawan with Atzmon (who played clarinet on four tracks of Pasar Klewer), together with oud player Kamal Musallam. The album comprises eight cuts that range from impressionistic/programmatic pieces like ‘Morning Mist’ and ‘Dawn’ through a folkloric song from Palestine – ‘Ramallah’ – the Atzmon original ‘Gaza Mon Amour’ from his album The Whistle Blower, Ellington – ‘In a Sentimental Mood’, which Atzmon had previously recorded on Nostalgico – and three pieces co-composed by the trio. It's an album of shifting moods that for the most part are reflective. The first three tracks, ‘Morning Mist,’ ‘Ramallah’ and ‘The Seeker’ are suggestive of sounds we associate with the Middle East, while ‘Peace and Beyond’ is a feature for Atzmon's clarinet against electric keyboards and electric guitar that impresses with its emotional intensity. Ellington's ‘Sentimental Mood’ is completely recast in a highly imaginative world music setting while the Middle Eastern rhythms of ‘Gaza Mon Amour’ inspires a clever, slightly abstract solo from Dharmawan before surrendering to Atzmon's passionate, hypnotic soprano sax.
