Smoke and mirrors? Or an intriguing re-creation of past musics? Either way this is a significant release, not least because Weber calls it probably his last recording. Encore follows the model of Résumé, re-working past recordings, but now Weber has edited live solos from 17 years with the Jan Garbarek Group. To these he has added his own piano, and, in a masterstroke, brought in van Rooyen on flugelhorn. Van Rooyen played on Weber's debut, The Colours Of Chloe, all those decades ago, and there is a sense of Weber the artist coming full circle with Encore: no longer able to play the bass, with composition increasingly wearing, Weber has found a way to celebrate his solo work, yet all the time there is a sense that these are the fruits of deep collaboration, at first with Garbarek and now van Rooyen. And of course Weber's passion for composition, yet joy in spontaneity are here combined as he ‘rewrites’ free solos into new shapes. A swansong of at times sublime variety, at once light and playful yet sonorous and soulful, surely there is more to come?
