In the October 2012 edition of this esteemed journal, I extolled the virtues of a double CD that bundled together the first three studio albums by this most dynamic of duos. Then, as a postscript added, any reader who ever caught them in person will also want their equally glorious Live At Minton's Playhouse double CD. That said, hold onto the plastic for a moment, for this latest incarnation scoops up everything in sight plus their lesser-known Blues Up And Down album which was taped soon after their Lookin' At Monk celebration. As for the exuberant Minton's performances they benefit from a healthy quota of bop standards including extended ‘live’ recordings of Dizzy's ‘Woody’n You', Bird's ‘Billie’s Bounce', plus three from Monk: ‘Epistrophy’, ‘Well You Needn’t' and ‘In Walked Bud’ – all three being reprised exactly a month later in the studio for the Lookin' At Monk LP. The two tenors may well be the main attraction but throughout they are well served by a cookin' rhythm section comprising an ever-inventive Junior Mance, Larry Gales' stoic bass playing, and sprightly drumming from Ben Riley. In passing, there are moments here when one is reminded of the Couriers at full steam, which can't be at all bad. As fresh now as when first recorded, I very much doubt if there are any two tenor players living today who could come remotely close to generating this degree of swordsmanship.
