Its title is a nod towards Armenian mystic G.I. Gurdjieff. Back in the early days of AMM, Eddie Prévost and his colleagues devoured such esotericism along with a contrasting diet of Marxism and anarchism. Unsurprising therefore that the drummer continues to produce music that feeds both heart and head in equal measure. Prévost is one of the finest and most musical of percussionists, who always seems to draw out something fresh from his collaborators, even those as versatile as Evan Parker and John Edwards. The two improvisations presented here do indeed offer a ‘remarkable’ range of music. There is an astounding duet between bass and drums on the first, while Parker's solo tenor engages in what sounds like a highland reel on the second! But it is when these three musicians combine that slow burn builds to something ever more combustible. John Edwards is certainly one of the finest bassists anywhere and Evan Parker can scarcely put a musical foot wrong at the moment. Yet, in fairness to both, for me it is Prévost's drumming that lifts this record into another sphere again. It's swing Jim, just not as we know it.
