A modern latin jazz album created in Europe by Geneva-based Sanz – a Venezuelan percussion maestro who has worked with everyone from Jimmy Bosch and Jason Rebello to Isaac Delgado and, most frequently, British pianist and composer, Alex Wilson. The latter's synth flourishes, chewy salsa chords and smart leftfield arrangements are all over this sophomore effort (released, as it happens, through Wilson's own imprint), most notably on a high-voltage latin take on ‘I Put A Spell On You’, lifted to giddy heights by the soulful stylings of Naomi Phillips and Sanz's compelling rhythms. Throughout, genres are played with and reinvented: gospel classic ‘We're Blessed’ gets freshened up; ‘Ella’ and ‘Eres Tu’, with their smash salsa hit samples, are Fania-tastic and forward-looking. Like Wilson, trumpet player (and album producer) Oscar Cordero is a constant presence, deploying his horn with sharp timing and gusto. But ultimately this is Sanz's project, and whether beating a clarion cowbell or weaving cross-rhythms on, variously, bongos, congas, timbales, drums, cajon and djembe, it's his contributions that stand out. Played with grit, produced with polish, overflowing with ideas and – especially when Sanz stretches out – heart.
