There’s a cut from this duo’s last album, Dream Logic, called ‘The Beauty of Decay’, and that could easily describe this long-gestated collaboration. Dream Logic itself was rainforest-rich in pedals and effects, but on Snow Catches… Eivind has even further uncoupled himself from the sound world usually associated with ‘guitar’: there are few fretted chords or struck neckboards here.
Instead, like other artists of sounds unseen and the notes between, like Frith, Fripp and Mike Cooper, to name but Brits, Eivind summons surprise with subtlety and suggestion. And in Bang he has a partner with an equally spacious imagination: the result is a music of intense concentration yet horizon-wide vistas; moments of spiked detail that dissolve into edgeless soundscapes. Sometimes the sirens call as on ‘Purplebright’, or from nowhere a funkish bass line leads (yet misleads) as on ‘The Witness’. There may be the essence of a luring melody, as with ‘Serenade’, or a dance down mysterious corridors with the Frisell-ish ‘Two Days in June’. But words are too solid and sullied to capture the fleeting fragility of snow on eyelashes.
