Opsvik must rattle up the air miles as he sustains a career on the busy New York and Oslo jazz scenes. While there are moments when he seems to be in two places at once, his series of Overseas albums that began in 2003 – this one is his fifth – are a series of musical postcards providing updates of his American adventures. His suave mix of art rock and jazz improv – this time part inspired by Talking Heads and the B-52s – is interestingly episodic and creatively subversive, such as mixing his acoustic basslines with a synth bass. There's lots of ideas, both compositionally and in solo statement, but do they hang together in a unified statement? Here the jury is out; this is fast, clever soundbyte jazz, full of quick musical fixes but few moments that demand replay.
