There's no denying the thrusting vitality charging through the snaking chicanes conjured by this formidable fusion unit – essentially a quartet, with Swedish guitarist Fiske now seemingly an everpresent fixture. ‘Occidentali’ and a particularly tormented take on Stevie Wonder's ‘You Are The Sunshine Of My Life’ near implode in their oceanic pursuit of endless riffs and frazzled phrasings, recalling everyone from Weather Report and Terje Rypdal to Nordic metal monoliths Motorpsycho and Spidergawd. Storløkken's incessantly busy keys generate skeins of skewed conduction, straining at the point of distortion before seguing into limpid pools of sun-dappled serenity, as on the acoustic filigrees rounding out the David Crosby-like apogee of ‘Kungsten’. Such moments indicate the growing influence of Fiske's psychedelic past. Elephant9 would do well to sign him up for the long haul. It's his contributions that imbue Silver Mountain with a dynamic range sometimes lacking in the group's previous outings, pushing it to the summit of an already impressive body of work.
