The reason for the distinctive title of this particular AvidJazz compilation is that, instead of the usual four 12-inch LPs, the two earliest sessions here were released as Blue Note 10-inchers. The resultant music, though hardly revolutionary at this distance, is quite gripping. Hope was a childhood friend of Bud Powell (who was his junior by 15 months) and, as well as similar listening and performing experiences, he evolved a style that was very reminiscent of Powell. But the energy is all his own, on the Blue Notes with Philly Joe and Blakey, and on a particularly dynamic Prestige blowing date leading Byrd, Mobley and Coltrane. After interruptions to his career, of the kind familiar to other beboppers, his final two trios (on the now-obscure but related Celebrity and Beacon labels) reprise six of the earlier pieces and add others to this almost all-original programme. The later sessions may be less dynamic but no less intense, and also benefit from the drumming of Jones.
