Here’s a handsome package honouring Remler in her prime. Just two or so years after her stunning debut Firefly, which she recorded aged just 24, there’s a maturity and a brazen self-confidence about these fiery performances that belie Remler’s age.
Plenty of these cuts are available on YouTube but this is the first time they’ve been corralled together on disc. There’s an in-depth essay from the inimitable Bill Milkowski and recollections from contemporaries like Eddie Gomez and those Remler inspired including, poignantly, Russell Malone, who, like Remler, recently passed away too soon. Being an American release though, there’s nothing from our own Deirdre Cartwright whose splendid Emily Remembered (2011) is a fine tribute.
The sound is excellent while the quartet recordings find Remler relishing Montgomery’s big-thumbed octave style, whether whistling through ‘Moanin’’ or of course ‘West Coast Blues’ which also elicits another of Remler’s heroes, Pat Martino. Even on ‘Samba de Orfeo’ Remler digs into the strings (as Mary Halvorson now does) with an unabashed virtuosity. But it’s the trio recordings that give her the freedom to expand and express, notably on a richly inventive 14-minute take on ‘All Blues’. A must have for fans and newbies alike.
