An unexpected surprise from pianist Cohen, now in his very early 30s but clearly aware of all of jazz history. The album title is perhaps a clue, but he includes trio versions of tunes from 1919 and 1928 (‘Symphonic Raps’, originally recorded by Armstrong and Earl Hines as members of the Carroll Dickerson band) as well as the 1940 duo ‘Pitter Panther Patter’ from Duke Ellington and Jimmy Blanton (see Jazzwise 256 for elucidation on the source). Each of these has convincing period-style playing but with distinctly contemporary rhythmic switches, while the title-track goes even further in providing such contrasts. The 47-minute recital has other facets too, including four attractive originals with two horns (of which the ballad ‘Little Angel’ has both parts overdubbed by trumpeter Hill) and these are much closer to the hard-bop mainstream. And then there are two song standards in ‘My Heart Stood Still’ and ‘Second Time Around’, that sound like Bill Charlap or a laid-back Oscar Peterson. You're tempted to ask if the real Emmet Cohen will stand up, but maybe he already has.
