Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi – veteran of projects with the likes of Ennio Morricone, Chet Baker and Art Farmer – is one of a very few European artists to have performed and recorded at the Village Vanguard in New York (in 2010). On this date, recorded 14 years earlier, he's closer to home, at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse (a venue sadly now closed – like so many others at the moment), but shouldered by the same collaborators, bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Paul Motian. It's a dense, entertaining hour, full of enterprising interplay that demonstrates the trio's endless creativity and Pieranunzi's engaging flow, equally informed by the jazz and classical traditions (Debussy is a strong influence). Motian provides the propulsive opener, ‘Abacus’, before the tempo settles down for a Pieranunzi ballad-style original, ‘The Night Gone By’, which provides Johnson with a great solo spot. Cole Porter's ‘Everything I Love’ is among the standards, which also include a deftly swinging take on Thelonious Monk's ‘Pannonica’ to close out the set.
