In the period prior to his passing towards the end of 2011, drum great Paul Motian contributed to a number of new recordings, not least his final bow as leader, The Windmills of Your Mind, released some months before his death. Other late recordings have emerged posthumously, the most recent to see daylight being this delightful trio set led by Italian classical-jazz pianist and composer Enrico Pieranunzi at the legendary Village Vanguard in New York. Pieranunzi, Motian and bassist Marc Johnson make a tremendously empathetic unit as they run through a series of numbers that mix Pieranunzi originals (including the lovely, dancing melancholy of ‘Fellini’s Waltz’, from his tribute album to the great Italian filmmaker) with standards, ranging from Thelonious Monk’s ‘I Mean You’ to Nino Rota’s ‘La Dolce Vita’. Early in his career, Pieranunzi performed with Lee Konitz and the latter’s ‘Subconscious Lee’ also gets rolled out here; Rodgers and Hart’s ‘My Funny Valentine’ meanwhile emerges transformed and reenergised.
