If there’s one thing that unites the hugely diverse range of artists who record for Mark Wastell’s Confront label, it’s that they tend to favour sound for its own sake, and texture, over explicit rhythm or overt melody.
And so it is here, three improvisations (one almost half an hour in length, another clocking in at under two minutes and a third measuring four minutes exactly) recorded live in Stockholm with no audience present; free-improve titan Gustafsson sounds like he’s playing anything but a sax or flute, while Lindal produces synthetic-sounding scrapes, whoops and squeaks (in a good way, of course) from her violin. These two, with the help of Lindström and Nordwall, create a fascinating, often disconcerting sound-world that is both of the moment and timeless.
As with most Confront releases, this CD is very well-recorded, allowing those all-important textures to come right through.
