Formed in 2010 while still a jazz post-grad at Trinity College of Music, alto sax newcomer Dee Byrne's quintet Entropi releases its debut recording. Byrne has also been actively co-running an improvised music night LUME with Quadraceratops leader Cath Roberts. Entropi features the trumpeter Andre Canniere, who has impressed as a leader with his pair of CDs on Whirlwind Recordings, open-minded free improv bassist Olie Brice and up-and-coming Tony Williams-influenced drummer Matt Fisher. Byrne's originals are inspired by the world of sci-fi as well as other themes relating to time and the cosmos. While ‘Mode for C’, is based on Coltrane's brilliant composition ‘Miles Mode’ the group's energies find a natural home when entering freer jazz territory. ‘Space Module’ is on a Mwandishi/Bitches Brew-ish trip; the looser collective feel of ‘Orbit’ and ‘Exploration Part 1 and Part 2’ with the leader's fellow ex-Trinity alumnus Rebecca Nash's colourfully percussive electric piano, Byrnes’ spacey vocalised sax and the assertive free improv of bassist Brice, add to an otherworldliness that's taking a leaf out of Sun Ra's book.
