The legends in question are Ron Carter and Kenny Barron, and they burst into action from the word go. The title track is a hard-edged belter over rhythm changes, and they set it up with a chorus of sure-footed fretwork and nimble-fingered piano. They're a hard act to follow, but the 20-year-old Japanese alto saxophonist cruises it. She won a scholarship to Berklee aged 16, and now plays with a well-schooled fluency and fruity sound that reminds me somewhat of Phil Woods. The repertoire and the controlled vibrato she brings to long notes, though, are pure Cannonball Adderley. And with workaday trumpeter Farinacci joining for ‘This Here’ and ‘Del Sasser’, there's something of a legacy-band feel to the album, which is difficult to shake off. Shorter's ‘Oriental Folk Song’ is nicely done, but lacks the original's sense of mystery, and ‘Body and Soul’ is a lovely ballad. That said, Barron and Carter play their socks off, and sound as good as I've heard them on their recent recordings.
