While not the baddest tribute ever to Monk, there are interesting things going on here, including the fact that pianist Reed takes more liberties than his one-time employer Wynton, yet manages to retain the impact of Monk's themes. Thus the funk groove of ‘Rhythm-A-Ning’ and the 7/4 adaptation of ‘Bright Mississippi’ work well, thanks to Clohesy and Cole and, whether for airplay or other reasons, the contributions of Blake and Trinidadian trumpeter Charles are kept on a tight rein. Of the two Reed pieces, the ballad ‘Monk Beurre Rouge’ with Blake is a highlight, whereas the solo title-track is just one of those 12-bars in B-flat that Monk loved to play. The other item without rhythm-section is the duet with José James, whose ‘Round Midnight’ (original lyrics only, not the Jon Hendricks one that Carmen McRae and more recently Josh Kyle have added to their versions) is almost unlistenable, its mannered attempt at a super-glutinous Joe Williams takeoff doing less than nothing for me.
