Veteran Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz wanted new ideas for Lune Rouge, so he invited young drummer Arthur Hnatek, a recent addition to his quartet, to compose the material. The result is markedly different from the group’s previous release, 2016’s Doni Doni. Gone is the Malian flavour, supplied by guest vocalist Rokia Traoré. This time we get poppy features from José James and Switzerland’s Andrina Bollinger. The instrumental numbers meanwhile are less funky and more electronica- and synth pop-orientated, with primal melodies, pulsing grooves and swirling keyboards that sound by turns retro, trippy and futuristic. ‘Cycle By Cycle’ is a highlight, opening with breathy trumpet and mournful Arabic harmonies before gathering pace. ‘Five On The Floor’ is clubby and nostalgic, and the evil bassline of ‘Algol’ has dub echoes. The edgy, experimental moments are some of the most interesting. ‘Tiger In The Train’ drops you into a rumbling, detuned alternate reality where drums sound like distorted cartoon explosions, and ‘Alhena’ is a fragment of blurred avant-metal. If these are Hnatek’s new ideas, I’m in favour.
