Featuring just under two hours of Ernestine Anderson's exquisite phrasing and remarkably sustained melodic lines, this superb 2-CD set is a must-have for any fans of vocal jazz. CD-1 features Anderson in small group and big band settings. Of the former, ‘Zingl Went The Strings Of My Heart’, recorded in Stockholm in 1956 with pianist Duke Jordan, bassist John Simmons and drummer Art Taylor, is astonishingly good, of the latter, ‘Did I Remember’, recorded with the Harry Arnold big band, and ‘Autumn In New York’ are similarly outstanding. The previously unreleased ‘You Go To My Head’ is an added bonus. The treats keep on coming in CD-2, ranging from an imperious ‘There's a Boat Dat's Leavin’ Soon for New York’, an irresistibly swinging ‘Social Call’ and the extraordinarily dramatic ‘Interlude’, all from the album The Toast Of The Nation's Critics recorded in Los Angeles in 1958 (arranged and conducted by Pete Rugolo). The 36-page CD booklet includes rare contemporary documents, text in French and English, plus a bibliography and detailed discography.
