This Norwegian pianist has been involved with significant figures on the local scene such as Marius Neset, and has also recorded twice in a quintet with Seamus Blake, while the trio heard here has been in existence for several years. Berg concentrates exclusively on the acoustic piano (with the merest touch of electronics involved when trumpeter Eick joins in) and, despite the use of conventional harmony and right-hand rhapsodising typical of Scandinavian piano trios, there’s considerable variety here from track to track. The bass of Poulsen plays occasional melodies in unison with the piano, while drummer Albertsen is sometimes occupied with insistent rhythmic figures, sometimes almost invisible, with the whole enterprise being mirrored by evocative titles such as ‘Svalbard’. Of the guests, Eick makes the most impressive contributions, while Silje Nergaard’s closing version of ‘I Do It For Your Love’ brings out the most straight-ahead lyricism.
