As usual for a Rune Grammofon release, the artwork for What Took You So Long exudes quality; likewise, there's no doubting the technical ability of the three musicians, collectively compared to Tord Gustavsen and EST. Yet EET lack the bite of their near namesake; labelmates In The Country are perhaps a more useful reference point. There's the same restraint, and the same sense that, despite the jazz trio format, the material is pithy and melodic enough to have originated in pop. In fact, all but two tunes are Eriksen originals, but the covers – polite, instrumental versions of karaoke classics ‘We Don't Need Another Hero’ and ‘Could It Be Magic’ – would make the playlist in purgatory. Their inclusion here may or may not be some kind of joke. Elsewhere, the Norwegian act do achieve genuine poignancy, not least on the solo closing number ‘Oslo’, written after the slaughter of 22 July. But the album as a whole is weedy.
