As we all know, the contemporary Scottish jazz scene is rich in talent, but it boasts few more accomplished bassists than Euan Burton, an indemand side and session man for the likes of Ari Hoenig and Jonathan Kreisberg as well as a highly rated leader and composer in his own right. This new disc, the result of several years' work and his first for Whirlwind, is a suite that smoothly unfolds its musical narrative across seven different parts, making smart and compelling transitions in mood and tempo between each segment, from low-lit ballad to fast bop. The track titles lack poetry (‘One‘, ‘Two’, ‘Three’, etc) but the music doesn't. The playing is dynamic and handsomely attuned to the cinematic feel of the project: ‘Six’ has Steve Hamilton and Will Vinson stretching out on Rhodes and sax before rising six-string star Mark McKnight takes the story into contrasting emotional territory.
