Recorded at two locations, London and Copenhagen, this collaboration between veteran UK improviser Evan Parker and Scandinavian free music trio Kinetics is made up of two distinctively different halves. At its centre are skewered the pair of Copenhagen sessions where Parker's fluid tenor sax excursions are embroidered with patterns of rhythmic abstraction – Jacob Anderskov's Monkish piano echoes, being the prime innovator for much of the action. Meanwhile Parker luxuriates in the lush warmth that he is producing from his instrument, a glowing tenor gush of circular breathed notes that continue to pour unabated. It is, however, the two London pieces that begin and end the album that make this set of recordings special – two free-jazz workouts that sound as though they could have been grafted from some lost SME rehearsal from the early 1970s. Here time feels reversed with Parker's raw blasts penetrating centre stage while, for the most part, Kinetics ably crash around him. The music here is exciting, soulful and wise, with perhaps just a hint of naked nostalgia.
