Here's one sure-fire way of spotting an improv CD that's a record of a live performance: it contains two tracks – one, the main piece, around 30-minutes long, and another, the encore, around 10 minutes long. That's the case with this duet recorded in Dublin in which the veteran saxophonist and improv pioneer Parker bumps up against younger Irish pianist Smyth. The longer piece here also conforms to another well-known live improv trope, which is to keep the performance going as one continuous, single piece, no matter what. As such, the pair explore a lot of ground in their allotted half hour. Beginning with glowering tenor and light piano sprinkles, the improvisation has a dreamy, elusive quality, giving way to more defined ripples and a rugged muttering from the sax. As Parker slides into his first burbling bout of circular breathing, Smyth generates low rumblings from inside the body of the piano. After a period of delicate meandering, Parker re-enters the circular-breathing zone, this time with a more raucous hee-haw, while Smyth creates an oceanic tumult with the sustain pedal firmly depressed. It's all exactly as one might hope and expect.
