In 1995, three of our finest saxophonists – one British, one French and one American – toured Germany, France and Switzerland. A single album, released in 1996, seemed to be all that had survived for posterity. Yet it now transpires that more of the tour was recorded – and, two decades later, the cassette has been discovered in a drawer. Jean-Marc Foussat, an expert on restoring old tapes, took care of editing, mixing and mastering. And the music? I don't know the collective noun for a gathering of saxophone titans – there can, of course, be only one saxophone colossus – but, whatever it is called, this is it. Yet Seven Pieces doesn't fall flat, instead demonstrating the breadth of possibility even within such an ostensibly limited instrumental palette. Featuring artwork from the ‘sax meeting’ concert poster on the front, and a Joe McPhee poem on the inside cover, it's a reminder to all tapers out there to tidy their drawers much more frequently.
