The reedsman Sam Rapley, a fairly recent Royal Academy of Music postgraduate, gives us just a small taster on a new four-track EP of his quintet Fabled that he formed in 2014. Fabled features the upcoming guitarist Alex Munk (Reuben Fowler, Dave Hamblett) and the already excellent CHAOS Collective bassist Conor Chaplin. Rapley, who has a darkly hued, foggy tone on tenor sax and clarinet, is ambitious yet persuasive as a writer on the central acoustic chamber suite-like ‘Tears Pt 1’ and Tears Pt 2’ where the lines between improv and composition become blurred. Rapley's clarinet explores a narrative while winding lyrically around the promising pianist Matt Robinson's Debussy-like ambience at first, until Munk, with an equally assured, harder-edged tone on the guitar, and Rapley switching to tenor sax, ratchet up the tension. It's framed by a pair of breezily melancholic jazz originals. But long-form, at least on the brief evidence here, appears to be Rapley's strength.
