The audience for this event, held at the Yankee Stadium in New York, topped 40,000, and photographs in the liner notes make you wonder how they crammed so many musicians on stage, and how those musicians coalesced into a unified sound that on the eight tracks of this LP at least, did not get into some kind of horrible tangle.

The crowd went crazy and eventually spilled onto the stage, so versions of ‘Soul Makossa’ were taken from a concert in Pueto Rico, and the band returned to the studios for five more tracks. No matter, this is live atmospheric Latin jazz its best, the concert off to a roaring start with ‘Viva Tirado’ and in fairness the excitement is unrelenting, as the musicians power through tracks like ‘Chanchullo,’ ‘Smoke,’ ‘There You Go’ and ‘Mama Guela.’

There is no room for niceties – soloists are concise, to the point, and clear the way for the next man which add to the pleasurable sense of momentum that the concert generates.

No time to get to the rock part of the concert, as the crowds began to spill into the stage area and force the musicians off stage, it was one of those nights, but a memorable one that demands you put the volume on maximum, sit back and enjoy.
