A Latin music lover's wet dream, this: not only has Strut Records got together with Fania, the label that launched and/or nurtured innumerable Nuyorican careers, for two CDs' worth of scorching, salsa-induced mayhem. They even deliver the famous film that captures that delirious New York night of 26 August 1971; when the stellar likes of flautist Johnny Pacheco, conguero Ray Barretto, vocalist Hector Lavoe and bandleader/pianist Larry Harlow – La Judio Maravilloso himself – stepped away from their respective orchestras and reassembled at this hugely popular Thursday night jam as a Latin music super group. With New York's early 1970s Latin music scene at its peak this was one historic occasion and, as grins on the faces of those onstage and off so ably demonstrates, there wasn't a soul there who didn't know it. From the joyful guajira number ‘Estrellas de Fania Llegaron Pa'Gozar’ (“the Fania Allstars are here to have fun”) to the now ubiquitous ‘Quitate tu’ with its übervocalist frontline, this was a night in Manhattan (but spiritually, in Spanish Harlem) that thanks to reissues such as these will never be forgotten.
