Fattigfolket is a Swedish/Norwegian collaboration based in Copenhagen. This delightful album makes interesting comparison with the work of Mostly Other People Do the Killing, a similarly configured ensemble currently in vogue, since they do not attempt to bludgeon you into submission with high energy pyrotechnics that operate on one emotional level, excitement, but rather offer a wide range of musical possibilities with a series of original compositions that draw you into the music with finely wrought melody and an acute sense of counterpoint. As their name implies, they draw on Nordic folkloric music for their inspiration, but it is neither their guiding light or sole source of inspiration. Like the Steiner Raknes Quartet, who inhabit similar emotional territory (albeit with a fiddle and baritone sax rather than trumpet and tenor), all are exemplary musicians dedicated to the group ethic of less is more. The album’s title seems to come from the urban institution of the open space – ten of the compositions refer to a specific park, while Grunewald is the famous German forest park in Berlin. Yet there are no programmatic inferences here, just solid well written melody and solos that orbit the composers intent so composition and improvisation seem of a piece. Their ability to come up with an ear-catching melodic line is exemplified by ‘Pfaueninsel Park’, but in truth this is an exceptionally good album that communicates timeless musical values.
