Fervour is a quintet led by the 24-yearold London-based Edinburgh-born trumpeter Sean Gibbs, a fairly recent graduate from Birmingham conservatoire. Following early exposure in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra, Gibbs has gone on to perform alongside Jim Rattigan's Pavillon, N'Orleans brass humdingers Young Pilgrims and the Calum Gourlay Big Band, among others. This is his Arts Council-funded debut recorded at Real World studios. Typical of much contemporary jazz coming out of Scotland, the playing is of a high standard and has an unfashionably optimistic vibe, with Gibbs' rounded tone and articulate, extroverted solos suggesting he's a fan of Wynton, as he cuts loose on some well-structured compositions that idiomatically range from New Orleans second-line through to contemporary hard bop and other post-bop moods. The young guitarist Ben Lee makes one of the standout contributions with his determined mix of electric blues, Velvet Underground and soul-jazz. Though it's a long way from the jazz cutting-edge, Gibbs' young fogeys make a joyful noise all the same.
