The second album by the trio of Thomas, Butcher and Solberg documents both sets of a performance at London’s Cafe OTO in January last year, revealing a unit both deeply at ease in each other’s company; and studiously intent on stretching out of any preconceived musical comfort zones.
The first set has Thomas playing grand piano, allowing Butcher to approach from a more markedly free jazz-informed direction than is customary. But the trajectories remain unfamiliar, thanks in part to Solberg’s defiantly unconventional percussion, skittering and fidgeting like a bag full of animatronic knitting needles. Energies rise and fall with restless fluidity, one moment spreading into shimmering vistas, the next suddenly contracting into dense pinpricks of concentrated intensity.
For the second half, Thomas switches to electronics, ushering in a more abstract mood. Even while he flicks out a thick layer of buzzes, rumbles and subliminal whines, it seems a more spacious environment, with the group-mind arriving in instantly discovered shared spaces. It never sits still, never repeats itself, never ceases to enthral.
