It shouldn't work: recorded at different times across different continents, stitched together like a duff Frankenstein, FFP explores a sound, a kind of late 1970s/80s fusion, that makes many squirm. But there's a strong fan base for this genre in Italy where Lesko is based and recorded most of his parts. This is a labour of love for this leader, who has hired A-list fusioneers (recording separately in GB and US) and a gaggle of Italian mates to flesh out his tunes. And, like my re-darned socks, it just about hangs together. So there's a gusto to the opening ‘Hipnosis’, some fab sax on ‘Lost in You’, which in its spiralling themes echoes early Eleventh House. Gabor himself has edges of Coryell in his electric work, though it's on the acoustic that he has a lyric facility that's not unpleasing. Quite why there's a Queen-like pomp to ‘New Horizons’ is unfathomable, and ‘We Are So Small’ inevitably climaxes the recording with the kind of cosmic vibe so necessary, it seems, to this style, with its reminiscence of early Return to Forever.
