The bass clarinet, played with a certain attention to atmosphere, inevitably summons echoes of Bennie Maupin's glowering contribution to Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. While Miles was experimenting with combining jazz with the rhythmic imperative of rock, this quintet can be seen to be doing something similar with post-dance beats, swirled in Osborn's murky reeds.

Certainly, most of these spontaneous compositions are in thrall to rhythm – and perhaps a bit too much. Some of the pieces are little more than sketches that establish interlocking grooves and quickly peter out. Moreover, drummer Sarathy Korwar seems to lack subtlety, locking into four-square vamps that leave little room for development. But there are more arresting moments, particularly when Bex Burch's wooden gyill xylophone sets up cycles reminiscent of Steve Reich's chiming minimalism, supported by Korwar switching to tabla. Most convincing is ‘My Resonance’ – a lilting update on Sun Ra's mid-1950s ‘camels at the oasis’ vibe with added electronics.

Apparently, this was the first time the quintet had all jammed together in real time in the same room (following a single Covid-time online session). It remains to be seen if their palette will deepen with further shared exploration.
