I've never liked the term ‘world music’ so, I promise, the words ‘world’ and ‘music’ will not appear in the rest of this review. As a category, it's a trifle misleading anyway. Yes, there are times, listening to this debut, when one could be at WOMAD: there's the quintet's Wolof name – it means ‘it's there’, apparently – and the fact that the album was recorded at Real World Studios. A West African influence, meanwhile, is evident in the prominent sabar drums. But there are all sorts of other genres in there too, from dub to Afro-rock: hardly surprising, perhaps, given that, between them, these musicians have worked with everyone from Red Snapper to Robert Plant, as well as Loop Collective's Outhouse and Outhouse Ruhabi. Guests, meanwhile, include Mercury-nominated hip-hop artist Ghostpoet, Senegalese singer Batch Gueye, Algerian/Parisian vocalist Iness Mezel and Gambian-born Fulani musician Juldeh Camara. Rhythm underpins the whole record, with strong hints of Gambia and Senegal, but Ghostpoet brings a mellower, headnod-friendly flow to ‘Don't Let Your Mind Unravel, Safe Travels’. Based in London, then, but with ears open to music from across the world. D'oh!
