There's an elegant facility to Cataldo's acoustic guitar work that's immediately attractive. The opening ‘I Tuoi Colori’ sets the tone: lucid, unhurried yet with intimations of darker shades. The sense of isolation, romantically melancholic, is also picked up on ‘Levante’. By contrast the title track has an air of dance and joy, with the dance feel most obviously echoed in ‘Waltz for Two’ with its echoes of Evans' ‘Waltz for Debby’. Copland doubles Cataldo's lines on the waltz, and to be honest it's often Copland's breaks, constrained yet suggestive that lift this album from its at times predictable shapings. Copland is especially bright on ‘Giulia’ and his interweaving with Nussbaum's cymbals brings a quality to an album of promise but light on consequence. An Aperol Spritz by a Ligurean beach as the sun sets sadly. Who's gonna turn that down?
