Naples-born but resident in Paris, Ciniglio is an excellent drummer and possibly even more interesting as a writer/bandleader. His debut album Wood (Fresh Sound New Talent) was with a trio including Aaron Parks, but this sextet obviously affords more scope for his imagination, with occasional excellent solos especially by Colom and fellow Parisian emigre Chalk. The inclusion of vibes and bass clarinet very occasionally recalls Dolphy's famous Out To Lunch, a bit less high-energy perhaps but strong in invoking varied moods, and with varied textures as Valet and Pastorino each drop out at times. Some of the nine tracks are described as reminiscences of New York where Ciniglio studied (‘945 St.Nicholas Avenue’, for instance, is the address of an apartment building in the Washington Heights area). The leader's drums are always stimulating - including some electronic drums, by the sound of it - but this excellent album should be enjoyed as an ensemble achievement.
