There are those who, in the past, have sniped at the stellar company with whom the trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti has played and recorded, saying that this is only because his musical career was a sideline from being a successful Swiss industrialist who could hire anyone he wanted to play on his discs. But this would be to ignore the fact that he sold the business while he was in his 50s and has focused exclusively for the last 20 years on a musical career that has established him as one of Europe's leading voices on trumpet and flugelhorn.
Within a few bars of Jack DeJohnette's scintillating piano introduction to Horace Silver's ‘Peace', Ambrosetti effectively blows away any doubts that he is among equals. There is no weak link in this marvellous band, but there are some exceptional moments. On ‘Silli In The Sky', Renee Rosnes' piano and the chattering cymbal work of DeJohnette create a perfect backdrop for Ambrosetti's authoritative yet contemplative playing. Colley's Spartan basslines and Scofield's minimalist comping set up an ideal framework for Rosnes' lyrical, tumbling phrases, and then Scofield's solo emerges joining the conversation eloquently. ‘Body and Soul' starts daringly with a drum solo, ushering in Uri Caine's piano and Ambrosetti's understated version of the familiar melody.
And the highlight is a haunting version of ‘Flamenco Sketches' that lures us back to 1959 and shows that there is so much more to be found by exploring this Milesian repertoire with a mixture of reverent affection and new energy.
